Shooting Architecturally

Slowly as I gain more knowledge and more software I can progress into shooting architecture the way I feel it should be represented.

I am finally comfortable going out just to work on shooting a single building or even a section of a building creatively.

As I begin this body of work I am interested mostly in lines, symmetry, great tonality and atmospheric light.

Above are two photos of the Aliant Building downtown St. John’s.

Even though were are currently in the winter here, I will still be making an effort to get out and shoot at least once a week.

Drafting Floor Plans, and Polyphasic Sleep.

Late night, working away.

I’m getting all of my vernacular architecture project together these days.

Drafting Floor Plans

Drafting Floor Plans

This evening I was drafting floor plans, scaling them down from random sizing with measurements to proper proportions.

Also, I’m 2 days into my polyphasic sleep schedule, which is working really, really well. Tonight I have a bit of a headache but it should be gone by the time I wake up in the morning!

More soon.

A Great Quote:

” All architects are born into architectural environments that condition their notions of beauty and bodily comfort and social propriety. Before the have been burdened with knowledge about architecture, their eyes have seen, their fingers have touched, their minds have inquired into the wholeness of their scenes.”

Week 3: 52 Weeks of Architecture and Design.

It’s more than just buildings.

These days the line between Architecture, Fashion, Design, and other disciplines is blurring more and more.

This week, I’m featuring a photograph I shot on black and white film. It was taken during a trip to a friends summer home. It is a square window, and it has been cropped to a square format to emphasize that.

This week is all about the study of light and shadow… and since it is of a summer home, we could say this is Vernacular Architecture.

Week 2: 52 Weeks of Architecture and Design.

Yeah, I know I have been super slack… I’m in transition! Give me a break!

I left my job as a cook and am now in school full-time at MUN, working towards architecture school!

4 out of 5 of my courses are all very interesting and should result in great grades. I’m finally set on a full course load and full term at University. FINALLY, hah.

Cheers to a step closer.

Week 1: 52 Weeks of Architecture and Design.

As I stated before, I have now switched to 1 image a week for the next year.

I have to reasons for this. I was obviously overwhelmed, but I was also unhappy with some of the images.

The “once a week” will give me more time to capture a better image, and also more time to process it.

Not long back from Halifax, I haven’t really had much time to shoot, but I will kick off the NEW 52 weeks project with this image:

Day 13: 365 Days of Architecture and Design.

Today I bought a fixed gear road bike.

After spending a week in Halifax, which seemed to be a month or more, I was hooked on the ‘fixie scene’.

What is that you might ask? Well it’s a bike, with only one gear, and set up so that the chain is fixed to the rear wheel.

If you pedal forwards, you go forwards. Pedal backwards, you go backwards. There is NO coasting. You just GO.

There are no gears, derailleurs, or extraneous things to ruin the ride. You just get on and pedal non-stop until you get where you want to go. It is the best feeling in the world.

I’m ditching the car until it’s well into December. God I love my bike!
